Product Details

There’s almost nothing as time honored as root beer, and Hires Big H has served famous Hires Root Beer since opening in 1959. Nearly everyone who comes to Hires Big H enjoys trying a frosty mug of root beer, and native Utahns appreciate a refreshing root beer float year round. So order you favorite Hires burger, a side of fries with fry sauce, and try this all-American root beer.

As American as apple pie, root beer was first developed commercially in 1866 by Charles Elmer Hires, a pharmacist from Philadelphia. His recipe was created as a health drink using herbs and other botanicals. Business started off slowly with sales to soda parlors and housewives. America wasn’t quick to appreciate this tasty beverage, but after the 1876 U.S. Centennial Exposition, “the greatest health-giving beverage in the world” began to pick up steam. In 1893, Hires began selling bottled, carbonated root beer and this refreshingly cool beverage has been an American favorite ever since.

If you want to enjoy the great taste of root beer at home, we have just the recipe. Hires Big H has developed its own delicious homemade root beer extract – Big H Root Beer Extract. One bottle of Big H Root Beer Extract (4.25 fl. oz.) makes five gallons of tasty homemade root beer. Enjoy it as a refreshing beverage, add ice cream for frosty root beer floats, and use it to flavor delectable root beer shakes and freezes. Order online today and enjoy old-time fun making delicious Big H Root Beer.

Product Directions

Root Beer Drink (non-carbonated)
Add five pounds sugar and one bottle of Big H Root Beer Extract to four gallons cold water and stir until sugar is dissolved. Serve over ice or refrigerate for later use. Yields four gallons of delicious non-carbonated root beer drink.

Root Beer Soda (carbonated)
Place the root beer drink in an open plastic or glass container (do not use an aluminum container, and do not cover the container with a lid). Add five pounds of dry ice, broken into small pieces, to the root beer drink. Stir frequently to prevent the ice from clumping together on the bottom of the container. It will take approximately 15 minutes for the root beer to carbonate. Serve immediately or pour the carbonated root beer soda into one gallon containers, placing a lid on each gallon to preserve the carbonation, and refrigerate for later use. Yields four gallons of delicious carbonated root beer soda.

Kids love to watch the process of carbonating the root beer!
